Chinese police are investigating claims that a security firm colluded with officials to detain protesters in secret prisons, known as "black jails".

Human rights groups say China has hundreds of such jails, and detainees are often subject to abuse - but the Chinese government has repeatedly denied they exist.

Apparently China was about to have a groundbreaking Gay Pageant which would've been the first of its kind in the country. The winner would be the official Mr. Gay China. Hit the jump to read the BBC article.

Homosexuality was illegal in China until 1997, and officials described it as a mental illness until 2001.

The event's organiser, Ben Zhang, said he had been hoping the event would mark another step towards greater awareness of gay people in China.

One of the judges, Weng Xiaogang, told the AFP news agency: "In my opinion, I believe it [the cancellation] had something to do with the issue of homosexuality."

Umm...ya think?
